Born on March 19, 1989 to Russian immigrants, Benya aspired musically at the age of eight with the help of his family’s everlasting support. Throughout middle school, he attained various writing awards and recognitions, including the MENCs 59th National Composition Award. In 2006, Russian Mosfilm director Valeri Rubinchik commissioned Barshai to score for his drama film Nanking Landscape. During high school, Benya began studying composition with Dr. Ira Taxin at the prestigious Juilliard School Pre-College Program. After a few semesters at Berklee College of Music, and Ithaca College, Benya is currently studying Jazz Guitar Performance at Kutztown Univesity with Guitar Professor David Cullen, and Jazz Director and Trumpeter Dr. Kevin Kjos.
